Tuscan flavors in Florence: the “Campagna Amica” indoor market in San Frediano

If you find yourself in Florence during this golden October, or at any time of year, and want an experience that goes beyond the classic museum visits, there is a place in the heart of the city’s most authentic neighborhood, San Frediano, that you absolutely must visit. At Via Pisana 15/R, the Coldiretti “Campagna Amica” initiative has created an indoor market that is a true hymn to the Tuscan land.

๐Ÿ“ How to reach it:

How to reach the Mercato di San Frediano

We explored this wonderful market for you, which was born a few years ago from a great idea: let’s bring the countryside and its products into the city. This is not a shop, it’s just the farmers selling their products directly to the customer.

Starting from the picturesque Ponte alla Carraia, (which is just next to our apartments inside Palazzo Medici) the walk is very short and pleasant (about 10 minutes). Simply cross the river toward the Oltrarno, continue straight into Piazza Nazario Sauro until you reach Borgo San Frediano. From there, a few steps will lead you to Via Pisana 15/R.

It is the perfect route to see the artisans’ side of Florence before diving into authentic farm flavors.

๐Ÿšœ The heart of the market is zero-km passion:

Open every Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday (8:30 AM โ€“ 2:00 PM), this market is not just a place of trade, but a meeting of hearts and minds. Here, farmers bring the fruits of their labor with immense love. Visiting this place, we immediately understand how much we owe to these people and their daily sacrifices to bring us such goodness.

๐Ÿฅš The secret of the eggs:

Real farmerโ€™s eggs

One of the first stops is the fresh eggs. You will notice shells of different colors (from pure white to deep brown): it isn’t a matter of quality, but simply the breed of the hen! The secret behind those shells, ranging from pearl white to chocolate brown and even “Tiffany” blue, is all down to genetics. Essentially, every egg is originally born white, but in the final hours of its “creation,” it receives a coat of natural paint in the hen’s oviduct.

The Leghorns, chic and minimal, prefer a minimalist white; the Marans (originally from France) feel more sophisticated and coat the shell with a brown film so dark it looks like it just came out of a chocolate boutique. But the true stars are the Araucanas, who add a touch of whimsy by producing blue or green eggs thanks to a pigment called oocyanin.

The real surprise is on the inside: the yolk is a bright red, almost orange. This extraordinary color is the result of a natural diet based on corn and fresh grass, which guarantees an intense flavor and superior nutritional properties.

๐Ÿท The Winery and the discovery of Ciliegiolo

Market wine shop

For wine lovers, the market’s winery is a gold mine of lesser-known labels. You absolutely must try Ciliegiolo.

Here is why we recommend it: while Sangiovese is the undisputed king of Tuscan tables and you will find it everywhere, Ciliegiolo is its close relative but decidedly harder to find.

The name is no accident: its grapes are as large as cherries and, once in the glass, they release a Marasca cherry aroma so intense it feels like biting into the fruit itself. So why is it so rare to find on its own? For years, it was considered a “helper” grape, used by farmers only to soften the edges of Sangiovese and add a boost of fragrance and color. Being a temperamental and delicate vine to grow, many producers preferred the easier path of more famous varieties. Only recently have courageous winemakers decided to stop hiding it in blends, bringing to light a fresh, velvety, and incredibly pleasant wine, perfect for those seeking a unique alternative deeply rooted in the local soil.

๐Ÿง€ Olive oil, sauces, cured meats, and cheeses

Extra virgin olive oils are a must, also available in flavored varieties:truffle, rosemary, or chili pepper. Bringing home a bottle of rosemary oil means capturing the scent of the Tuscan hills in a jar. And for those with little time who don’t want to sacrifice excellence, the farmers’ready-made sauces are the secret to a perfect dinner: made with sun-ripened tomatoes and selected meats, they are the ideal base for your pasta.

If you truly want to indulge, not just with flavors but also with aromas, do not miss the cured meats Tuscan prosciutto and salami ย are pure poetry, especially if you have bought some fresh bread (strictly Tuscan and saltless to enhance the flavor of the meats).

Combine it all with pecorino cheese, discover the freshness of raveggiolo, and the flavor of a good burrata, and you will feel like you are in heaven. You won’t be able to forget these flavors, we can assure you!

๐Ÿ‘จโ€๐Ÿ‘ฉโ€๐Ÿ‘งโ€๐Ÿ‘ฆ A little space for the kids:

A space for the little ones

The market also keeps families in mind. There are dedicated spaces where children can learn to distinguish seasonal plants, draw what they see, and gain hands-on experience.

The spaces have been transformed with the idea that grocery shopping can be turned into a lesson in ecology and knowledge, even for the little ones.

This is just a taste: at the San Frediano Market, you will find all this and much more. Whether you are looking for the perfect pecorino, fresh field vegetables, or simply a genuine smile, this place will surely win you over.
