The street where the building is located crosses the entire south area of the city center, right on the other side of the river Arno.
The “Oltrarno area” was rebuilt following the lead of the Medici family who settled here. In fact they moved to the new residence, called Palazzo Pitti, in the Renaissance.
At that time the wealthiest families fought to build the most beautiful palaces along via Maggio, via dei Serragli and the other adjacent streets, considered more prestigious than the north bank of the Arno.
It was in the 16th century that Palazzo Medici came to life. The mighty walls and the structure are typical of Renaissance Florentine architecture. Thanks to a skilful restoration, many frescoes have been kept in the apartments as well as the columns and other elements in “pietra serena”.
