Gubbio: a timeless Umbrian gem presented by our guests Miriam & Nello

Umbria is a region found in the heart of Italy. It’s not as famous as Tuscany, but we personally think it should be! It boasts picturesque landscapes, historic towns, and rich cultural heritage. Its main city, called Perugia, and its charming villages, such as Gubbio which is a medieval hill town, makes Umbria a lovely destination for history  and art lovers. With its cobblestone streets, ancient Roman ruins, and stunning medieval architecture, Gubbio transports visitors back in time.

Let’s discover the city thanks to Miriam and Nello, our amazing Canadian guests that went there for a day of adventure!

Miriam and Nello in Gubbio

Gubbio is easily accessible by car. If you’re driving, the A1 motorway is the main route to Umbria. From there, you can follow the signs to Gubbio. It will take approx 2 hours and half.

The city stands in front of the “Monte Ingino”, a majestic peak that dominates the city skyline. This mountain, immortalized by Dante Alighieri as the “Hill chosen by the Blessed Ubaldo” in his Paradiso. A pilgrimage site for centuries, the mountain is home to the Basilica of Sant’Ubaldo, a stunning architectural marvel that draws visitors from far and wide.

Miriam and Nello’s Gubbio Adventure

Our long-time clients, Miriam and Nello, recently embarked on a journey to discover the hidden gems of Gubbio. They were particularly enchanted by the town’s historic center, where they strolled through narrow, ancient streets, admiring the buildings and picturesque squares.

One of the highlights of their trip was a visit to the Palazzo dei Consoli, a magnificent medieval palace that now houses a fascinating museum. The palace’s imposing facade and stunning interior courtyards offer a glimpse into the town’s rich history.

For a truly unforgettable experience, Miriam and Nello recommend a leisurely walk up to the Basilica of Sant’Ubaldo. The basilica offers breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding countryside. The climb may be challenging, but the reward is well worth the effort.

Umbria is also a culinary paradise. The region boasts a great range of flavors, from the earthy richness of black truffles to the savory delights of Norcia’s cured meats. Pair your meal with a glass of local wine, such as Sagrantino di Montefalco or Orvieto, for a truly authentic Umbrian experience.

A Culinary Delight at Taverna del Lupo

After a day of exploring Gubbio’s historic sites, Miriam and Nello indulged in a delicious lunch at Taverna del Lupo. This charming trattoria offers a taste of authentic Umbrian cuisine, with a focus on fresh, locally sourced ingredients. The cozy atmosphere and friendly service make it the perfect place to relax and enjoy a leisurely meal.

Whether you’re a history lover, a foodie, or simply seeking a peaceful escape, Gubbio offers something for everyone. So, why not plan your next Italian adventure to this enchanting hill town?
